Post by EmriTheUnstoppable Thu Apr 01, 2021 1:22 pm

Welcome to the Draconomicon

The idea of what in the world a "dragon" is tends to vary wildly from culture to culture. As some of you may or may not know, there are many types of dragons, from western style to the traditional Chinese, and all sorts of wyverns, wyrms and drakes in between. The only general consensus being that they are fearsome beasts, possessing powers- be they magical or physical- that we mere mortals can only dream of. There are many different types of dragons, but the type many find familiar are usually large, terrifying, and scaly, usually breathing fire or some other kind of elemental attack.

In order to help give you ideas about your character, and to provide some in-depth knowledge about dragons and their anatomy- Welcome to the Draconomicon! A comprehensive guide to the many types of draconiformes that can be found in Nuira, their physiology, anatomy, and general magical natures. Hopefully this guide helps with any confusion you may have as you create your characters, but please don't hesitate to reach out to the staff if you have any further questions!

So, without further ado, let’s begin!

Dragon Taxonomy

Draconiformes, or dragon-like creatures, come in many different shapes and sizes, with different means of attack, flight, and other unique features, a variety of which will be listed under their respective types below. As mentioned previously, most draconiformes are large, scaly, and terrifyingly powerful, but each dragon is very different in their external and internal anatomy. Some have long, windy bodies, while other have short, stout ones. Some have sharp spikes, while others have fluffy feathers and sometimes even thick fur. It varies by the individual, but- thankfully- there are some consistent features within the different types of dragons, mostly in regard to the arrangement of their limbs.

Most draconiformes age the same way humans age, up until the age of around 25, depending on the draconiform (Age increments will be specified under each type of dragon below). Around the age of 20-30, the dragon will reach sexual maturity, and their aging will significantly decrease. This means a dragon can be 600 and still have the mind/appearance of a young adult. Usually, dragons will remain in the prime of their lives for several hundred years, only showing minimal signs of aging (larger size, longer horns, stained and dulled teeth and claws, longer fur, thicker scales, etc...) throughout this "prime time". Afterwards, old age slowly begins to creep up on the dragon a couple hundred years before their maximum life expectancy, usually in the form of slowed reflexes, dimmer eyesight, achy joints and other usual side effects. The decline is slow at first, but- mirroring the accelerated aging of the hatchlings- the closer to death the dragon is, the faster the consequences of old age catch up to them.

Draconiforme Limits

To ensure that no character or type of dragon has an inherent, unnatural advantage over another, there are a few rules and limits that every and all draconiforme must abide by. Thus far, they are the following:

No draconiform may fly faster than speeds of 120mph (~53.6m/s). Dives are an exception to this rule, but all the same, may not exceed speeds of 140mph (~62.6m/s). Additionally, no draconiform may swim faster than 80mph (35.8m/s).

Any fire used, excreted, or breathed by any draconiforme in any way cannot exceed more than 2,200°F (~1,200°C). This includes any other heated substances, such as slime, plasma or other fluids. Similarly, any source of extreme cold used, excreted, or breathed by any draconiforme in any way cannot be less than Absolute Zero, or  -459.67°F (~−273.15°C).

All characters must fit within the average size and age ranges listed under the information on their specific type of draconiforme. If you wish to have a character larger than those listed limits, you may do so. HOWEVER, your character must fit within the listed maximum size categories under their specific type of dragon. i.e. if they're a western, check the western limits. Same thin with easterns, wyverns, wyrms, etc...

NOTE: If your character exceeds the listed averages under your type, you need at least one strength listed under your application reflecting the advantages of that great size. For example: "Large Size: Due to this character's large size, they are more physically powerful than the average dragon, and are therefore largely more durable than the average draconiform."

[3] The Draconomicon Empty The Draconomicon: Western Dragons

Post by EmriTheUnstoppable Thu Apr 01, 2021 1:23 pm

Western Dragons
[3] The Draconomicon Wester10

One of the most common kinds of draconiformes, these powerful, winged beasts come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, from short and stout to tall and long. The average adult western dragon often ranges in height from 17 to 27 feet tall, and their lengths vary from dragon to dragon as well, sometimes being only about 1.5 times the height, while other times being as much as 2 times the height of the dragon. This goes for their wingspan, with wingspans ranging from quite small, to so much as 3 times the dragons height as well; in other words, very large wings are fairly common in western dragons.

All western dragons have at least one pair of wings, four legs, and usually have external ears, as well as usually being covered in either scales, feathers, or fur. There a variety of different breeds of western dragons, each adapted and evolved for dealing with different kinds of climate, such as IceWings, which are resistant to the cold, with special serrated claws that allow them to better grip the ice, and dragons like Night furies, which are resistant to fire, and can fly at incredibly high speeds at high altitudes. Each dragon has very different physical capabilities, which all vary depending on what species they are. May sometimes, on rare occasions, have one to three heads. They are known to live up to 3500 years.

Like most draconiformes, their appearance relies heavily based on their habitats. Most western dragons generally tend to live in mountainous to taiga environments, though they are not beyond living in more humid areas, as well. Due to their hardiness, most western dragons can live in many areas of the world, and many different kinds of biomes. This hardiness (and general popularity in most fantasy media) makes western dragons the most common type of draconiform on Nuira. There are two different subtypes of western dragons: Terrestrial and Aquatic.

TLDR; NORMAL LIMITS: Max height: 27 feet tall. Max length: 54 feet long. Max wingspan: 81 feet wide (total).

NOTE: If you wish to have a western dragon that exceeds the listed averages under your type, you may, but you need at least one strength listed under your application reflecting the advantages of that great size. For example: "Large Size: Due to this character's large size, they are more physically powerful than the average dragon, and are therefore largely more durable than the average draconiform."

MAXIMUM SIZE LIMITS: Max height: 32 feet tall. Max length: 64 feet long. Max wingspan: 96 feet (total).

Terrestrial Western Dragons

Terrestrial dragons are usually found in the mountains, deserts, alpine forests, taigas, deciduous forests, grassland, jungles, and may sometimes even be found in swamps. They feed on a variety of prey, from fish to deer to elk, and some may even eat plants and fruit, though this is rare, and it depends on the species. These kinds of western dragons usually possess magic. While not as potent or powerful as an arctic wyvern's or an eastern dragon, they can still grow this inherit ability to become quite strong. Unlike arctic wyverns and eastern dragons, however, not all western dragons are born with magic. All western dragons, however, can learn magic.

Aquatic Western Dragon

The aquatic variety are found primarily in the oceans, lakes, rivers. They can be found in swamps and estuaries, but are significantly more rare in these environments as the transition from salt to fresh water can be hard on water breathing dragons, and because the stagnant swamp waters hold far less dissolved oxygen than rivers, lakes, and oceans. Additionally, they can also be found in both arctic and tropical areas- provided they have the proper adaptations to survive in said environments of course. They feast primarily on aquatic life, from fish to dolphins to seaweed, depending on the species. It is rare for aquatic dragons to possess magic, and like western dragons, is something that needs to be taught, but it usually is a lot harder to learn and rare for aquatic dragons to be born with magic. Additionally, aquatic dragons often possess gills and fins that allow them to more easily speed through the water.

[3] The Draconomicon Empty The Draconomicon: Eastern Dragons

Post by EmriTheUnstoppable Thu Apr 01, 2021 1:24 pm

Eastern Dragons
[3] The Draconomicon Easter10

Eastern dragons, or lung dragons as they are often called, are likely the 2nd most common kind of draconiform. They are incredibly long, often times being as much as 3 times as long as they are tall. However, most eastern dragons don’t grow much larger than about 10-15 feet tall, and about 65 feet long but there will always be a few exceptions. One of the most obvious characteristics of the eastern dragon is their lack of wings. However, despite this lack of wings, most if not all eastern dragons are still able to fly. This is probably due to the eastern dragons being incredibly proficient in magic. They are generally usually covered in either scales, fur, and/or feathers. Most eastern dragons have external ears, but some have internal ones. Some eastern dragons are depicted with antlers in the place of horns, and having bird-like feet. The average eastern dragon is usually varied from color and what not, but their general shape does not change, unlike with the western dragon. All eastern dragons have both hind legs and front legs.

TLDR; NORMAL LIMITS: Max height: 15 feet tall. Max length: 65 feet long.

NOTE: If you wish to have a eastern dragon that exceeds the listed averages under your type, you may, but you need at least one strength listed under your application reflecting the advantages of that great size. For example: "Large Size: Due to this character's large size, they are more physically powerful than the average dragon, and are therefore largely more durable than the average draconiform."

MAXIMUM SIZE LIMITS: Max height: 20 feet tall. Max length: 80 feet long.

Unlike western dragons, the eastern dragons have a much more specific requirement for survival. The majority of eastern dragons live near rivers, lakes, streams, springs, and oceans; anywhere that's near a dependable source of water. Some eastern dragons can also be found by oasis’ in the desert, in swamps, and in the jungle, where the air is moist and wet. Some species of eastern dragon live up in the alpines, but not very many, and none enjoy the hot temperatures of the desert, with the exceptions of the ones that live out in the oasis.

Eastern dragons are largely much more adept in magic than the average draconiform. All eastern dragons are born with the adept ability to cast spells and use their own magical abilities at will, without having to be taught how to use these abilities. Thus, they make up for their lack of variety in breeds in their vast knowledge of elemental and arcane magics. Often, eastern dragons are born with a special pearl tucked under their chins. It is said that these pearls are the source of eastern dragons innate magical prowess, but whether or not that's true is anyone's guess- especially considering the fact that many eastern dragons are born without these pearls, yet are still incredibly magically inclined in their own rights. Generally, eastern dragons are depicted as wise, but this isn’t always the case as all eastern dragons have their own unique personalities and appearances. In general, these creatures live up to 4,000 years.

[3] The Draconomicon Empty The Draconomicon: Wyrms

Post by EmriTheUnstoppable Thu Apr 01, 2021 1:24 pm

Wyrms
[3] The Draconomicon Wyrm10

Wyrms are rather unique as they resemble massive legless lizards rather than a traditional dragon. While the average viewer may dismiss them as some sort of giant serpent, their internal and external biology is distinctly draconic in terms of their inherent powers and abilities. The average "height" of a wyrm is really it's diameter, and usually ranges from 5-10ft. However, a wyrm can grow incredibly long, especially compared to other dragons, often up to 6 times its diameter. If a wyrm were to get old enough, they could grow up to as much as 60 feet long. Generally, wyrms have rough, rigid scales, but are not beyond soft snakelike scales as well. They may have horns and spikes along their heads and spines, but never anything too outrageous to allow them to retain their generally snake-like appearance. Some aquatic and rare species of wyrm may have fins as well. Wyrms can live as long as 1,500 years.

TLDR; NORMAL LIMITS: Max diameter: 10 feet. Max length: 70 feet long.

NOTE: If you wish to have a wyrm that exceeds the listed averages under your type, you may, but you need at least one strength listed under your application reflecting the advantages of that great size. For example: "Large Size: Due to this character's large size, they are more physically powerful than the average dragon, and are therefore largely more durable than the average draconiform."

MAXIMUM SIZE LIMITS: Max diameter: 15 feet. Max length: 80 feet long.

The average wyrm operates much like a snake, often slithering, burrowing, or sometimes even swimming to get around. Additionally-despite their lack of limbs- wyrms are often excellent burrowers, managing to tunnel through earth and sand at remarkable speeds, and sometimes even digging out large warrens to live in as the years go by. As such, most wyrms tend to live in forests, grasslands, savannahs, different bodies of water, and sometimes even in the mountains, alpines, grasslands and sometimes even swamps. They can really live anywhere, but tend to thrive in areas of warm and moderate weather as opposed to extreme environments due to the majority of wyrms being as cold-blooded as their snakelike cousins. Wyrms often possess little to no inherent magical abilities. Due to their lack of spellcasting knowledge and the fact that they are not born with magic, their ability to learn magic in the first place is highly compromised.

Terrestrial Wyrms
Terrestrial wyrms are the most common kinds of wyrms. They generally live in places like the deserts or mountains, sometimes even grasslands and savannahs. They are one of the shortest types of wyrms, and generally- like wyverns- can be very territorial and violent when they hunt. They are quick, and- while not the brightest dragons in the world- make up for that in pure and unchecked physical power. A terrestrial wyrm's diet is highly varied considering the variety of habitats in the world, but often consists of large game, which they then crush and constrict with their powerful bodies, and swallow whole.

Aquatic Wyrms
Aquatic wyrms often spend their time swimming through the ocean like a sea serpent. But, just like fish, there are salt and freshwater varieties. Some can easily swap between the two, but the transition is rough for most water breathing dragons. As such, some wyrms live in lakes, and some of the smaller ones may be found in rivers, but the largest tend to be found in the oceans. Overall though, they are considered the second longest of all three wyrm subtypes. They feed only on seafood- primarily fish- and have gills, so seeing one of these out of the water is rare.

Aerial Wyrms
Aerial wyrms are the longest of all wyrms subtypes, often seen flying gracefully through the air as their long bodies wind and writhe smoothly through the clouds behind them. Aerial wyrms rarely land, preferring to spend the majority of their time hunting, flying, and otherwise on the move as their length can be somewhat cumbersome on the ground. They do, however, have to land to sleep, drink, and eat (provided they haven't yet figured out how to catch birds in mid air). As such, aerial wyrms prefer to live in isolated, mountainous areas, and other wide open spaces such as plateau's and plains.

[3] The Draconomicon Empty The Draconomicon: Wyverns

Post by EmriTheUnstoppable Thu Apr 01, 2021 1:26 pm

Wyverns
[3] The Draconomicon Wyvern10

These sneaky, trouble-making draconiformes are best known for their sly personalities and feral natures. The average physical appearance of a wyvern is that of a bipedal dragon, with a pair of wings in place of their front limbs. Some wyverns stand upright like birds, while others will walk on their wings, giving them a similar appearance to a regular dragon. All wyverns have only two hind legs, and may have one to two pairs of wings. Like western dragons, most wyverns are greatly diverse when it comes to their environment and physical appearance; some appear short while others appear long, and each is varied with either an upright or down body structures. Each wyvern varies greatly in its height to length ratio, with most wyverns being from 7-20 feet tall, with a length that varies greatly, often ranging to up to twice the height, and very large wings (3-4 times the height of the wyvern), sometimes even larger than that of the average western dragon. Both types of wyvern live about 2,500 years.

TLDR; NORMAL LIMITS: Max height: 20 feet tall. Max length: 40 feet long. Max wingspan: 80 feet wide (total).

NOTE: If you wish to have a wyvern that exceeds the listed averages under your type, you may, but you need at least one strength listed under your application reflecting the advantages of that great size. For example: "Large Size: Due to this character's large size, they are more physically powerful than the average dragon, and are therefore largely more durable than the average draconiform."

MAXIMUM SIZE LIMITS: Max height: 25 feet tall. Max length: 50 feet long. Max wingspan: 100 feet (total).

Most wyverns make their homes in grasslands, forests, mountains, and deserts. They usually tend to avoid wet places, as they prefer to be warm and dry, though there are some arctic wyverns. As for diet, most wyverns enjoy smaller prey such as rabbits, deer, and the occasional bear; however, they are much more territorial than other dragons, and can be much more aggressive while hunting. Additionally, they often have an affinity for shiny objects, though- as always- there are some wyverns for whom this is not true.

Arctic Wyvern

Arctic wyverns are the wise and powerful wyverns often spoken of in various myths and folklore. Sometimes these wyverns are mistaken for western dragons due to their tenancies to walk on their wings as- to the untrained eye- it gives them a similar appearance to a regular quadrupedal dragon. Additionally, arctic wyverns are unique in the sense of how easily they can learn and use magic. It is a skill they are inherently born with and master remarkably fast; often even rivaling the magical mastery of eastern dragons. They are found primarily in cold environments, be it alpine, mountainous, taiga or tundra, but are sometimes found in forests and near the coastline.

Savalier Wyvern
Savalier wyverns are among the more common varieties of wyverns. Their arctic wyvern cousins easily dominate thanks to their magical proficiency, but since they are more restrained to the colder regions, savalier wyverns have propagated throughout practically the rest of Nuira. Savalier wyverns are generally less intelligent than their arctic cousins, and carry themselves much like the stereotypical raptors do: walking and running on 2 legs, but with its wings kept folded against its body like a bird. Savalier wyverns, as mentioned, are usually less intelligent than arctic wyverns, but they make up for this with incredible speed, unparalleled ferocity, and the tendency to- again, like raptors- hunt in packs, working together to take down truly impressive foes.

[3] The Draconomicon Empty The Draconomicon: Hydras

Post by EmriTheUnstoppable Thu Apr 01, 2021 1:26 pm

Hydras
[3] The Draconomicon Hydra10

Largely debated as the most terrifying kind of draconiform, hydras have very unique physical appearances and traits, and are often considered the most varied type of draconiform due to their remarkably high susceptibility to mutation. If you know dragons, you likely know what a hydra is, as well, as they are rather hard to miss. Their unique characteristic of having multiple heads is largely what distinguishes them from dragons, but- while rare- other types of dragon may have up to 3 heads as well. The main way to tell a hydra from a dragon- in addition to their multiple heads- are their low centers of gravity. To support the weight of all those extra heads and necks, hydras usually have short, stumpy legs, or a thick, snakelike lower half. They also sometimes have multiple tails as well, and come in a variety of colors and appearances. The average hydra is about 15-25 feet tall (including the necks, the lengths of which often vary between 5 to 10, or sometimes even 15 feet long). The average length of a hydra is often 2.5 times as long as they are tall, and- should they have wings- their wingspans usually run to about 2-3 times as wide as their height. Both types of hydra can live up to 3,000 years.

TLDR; NORMAL LIMITS: Max height: 25 feet tall (including necks). Max length: 62.5 feet long. Max wingspan (if applicable): 75 feet wide (total).

NOTE: If you wish to have a hydra that exceeds the listed averages under your type, you may, but you need at least one strength listed under your application reflecting the advantages of that great size. For example: "Large Size: Due to this character's large size, they are more physically powerful than the average dragon, and are therefore largely more durable than the average draconiform."

MAXIMUM SIZE LIMITS: Max height: 30 feet tall. Max length: 75 feet long. Max wingspan: 90 feet (total).

A majority of hydra are usually land dwelling thanks to their stumpy legs and bulky bodies, but a number of hydras can and do live in the oceans, rivers, lakes and even swamps. Most hydra, however, live in places like savannahs, grasslands, other wise open spaces, and sometimes even forests to better be able to maneuver their bulky forms. While surprising, it actually isn’t all that rare for a hydra to be born with powerful arcane talents. While hydra are normally not recognized as intelligent, they actually rival the intelligence of some wyverns and dragons with their knack for puzzle-solving and riddles. But- like always- this is not true for every hydra.

Lernaean Hydra
Lernaean hydras are the rarer subtype of hydra, notably set apart from their common brethren not by any sort of visual characteristic, but instead by their ability to regenerate injuries at an incredible pace. Most famously, if you cut off one of heads on a lernaean hydra, 2 more will grow back. Other than that, they resemble the common hydra in almost every other aspect. Lernaean hydras are usually found in more aquatic environments, often times favor having snakelike lower halves instead of legs, and are more likely to have every head controlled by a single personality, and a large central brain located at the base of all the necks.

Common Hydra
Like the name implies, common hydras are far more common and widespread than Lernaean hydras are. Common hydras are more likely to have legs than a Lernaean hydra, and- more importantly- lack the regenerative capabilities of the Lernaean hydras. So how to common hydras deal with losing heads? It's truly a somber affair, as each head usually has its own personality. Losing a head for a common hydra is more horrible than most people can even imagine; it's like simultaneously losing a sibling, and losing a part of yourself. The heads of a common hydra are connected to the main body by a ball and socket joint, and automatically cuts off the blood flow from the major arteries, and autonomically releases that neck's bones from the socket as soon as that head's brain has died. So should a head die in battle, the hydra immediately loses control of that head and neck as it flops lifelessly to the ground. Necrosis sets in quickly, so the remaining heads must tear the lifeless neck out of its socket and clean that severed stump at the shoulder to prevent any infections from setting in.

[3] The Draconomicon Empty The Draconomicon: Drakes

Post by EmriTheUnstoppable Thu Apr 01, 2021 1:27 pm

Drake
[3] The Draconomicon Drake10

While from far away, one of these could be mistaken for some kind of dinosaur, they are actually much more intelligent and stronger than both of those. Drakes are often mistaken for these creatures that aren’t dragons due to their lack of wings, as this is their most distinguishable characteristic. Another thing unique about drakes is that, generally, most drakes are smaller than dragons, being only about 7-20 feet tall, similar to an eastern dragon, and are usually 1.5-2 times as long as they are tall.

TLDR; NORMAL LIMITS: Max height: 20 feet tall. Max length: 40 feet long.

NOTE: If you wish to have a drake that exceeds the listed averages under your type, you may, but you need at least one strength listed under your application reflecting the advantages of that great size. For example: "Large Size: Due to this character's large size, they are more physically powerful than the average dragon, and are therefore largely more durable than the average draconiform."

MAXIMUM SIZE LIMITS: Max height: 25 feet tall. Max length: 50 feet long.

They usually have pretty stoic, strong muscled builds, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be slender as well. That strong build makes drakes excellent burrowers, runners, and swimmers, as they often have great amounts of stamina. They make up for their lack of wings in their speed: a drake’s running speed can reach as much as 80 mph, higher than that of a cheetah, the fastest- non draconic- land animal. This makes them unique from other draconiformes, due to the average draconiform only being able to run about 50 mph. Additionally, though they are much less common, there are aquatic drakes! These aquatic drakes tend to take after otters in their build and life style. Their tails also tends not to be as long as most dragons or draconiformes since they don't need one to help control their flying, but the aquatic variety use their powerful tails to propel them through the water- much like the modern day crocodile! Drakes can live up to 700 years.

The average drake can be found in many different locations, from deserts, to forests, mountains, grasslands, tundras, and taigas. Albeit rare, there are several kinds of drakes that can swim, and are often found in wetlands, swamps and oceans. Due to their generally smaller size, a drake will general feast on anything that they can get their claws around, due to their primal instinct. Drakes know virtually no magic, but they can be deceptively intelligent. Often times, a drake can trick someone into thinking they know magic, when they actually know none. There have been a few documented cases of drakes knowing magic, but these cases are few and faaaaaaaaar between.

These majestic, winged beasts are the wyrms of the sky. Amphiptere, or winged snakes as they are often called, are snakelike draconic creatures without any legs, having only large, graceful wings. They are nicknamed winged snakes because they are often very long in length, sometimes with their tail having some kind of flattened fin at the end of it, or some kind of feathery accessory to help them adjust their course mid-flight. They are usually known for being quite small compared to other draconiformes, usually ranging from 5-15 feet in diameter, but are more commonly only about 10 feet in diameter, at most. Their length is a lot like that of a wyrm, often being so much as 4x their diameter. Their large wings are their most distinguishable characteristic- and what tells them apart from aerial wyrms- and as such can be up to 5.5 times their diameter. They are known to have the largest wingspan of any other type of dragon and this pays off. To make up for their lack of legs, amphipteres are the fastest flying creatures of all the draconiformes, able to reach top speeds of 135 mph, and have a diving speed of 200 mph, much like that of a peregrine falcon. Can live up to 2000 years.

TLDR; NORMAL LIMITS: Max diameter: 15 feet. Max length: 60 feet long. Max wingspan: 82.5 feet wide (total).

NOTE: If you wish to have an amphiptere that exceeds the listed averages under your type, you may, but you need at least one strength listed under your application reflecting the advantages of that great size. For example: "Large Size: Due to this character's large size, they are more physically powerful than the average dragon, and are therefore largely more durable than the average draconiform."

MAXIMUM SIZE LIMITS: Max diameter: 20 feet tall. Max length: 60 feet long. Max wingspan: 110 feet (total).

As to be expected of a primarily flying animal, they live in the high mountains, but they also tend to live in places like jungles, and coastal regions as well, provided there happens to be a place for them to roost. Amphipteres are sort of like the birds of the dragon world, and come in many kinds of shapes and sizes. They feed primarily on smaller prey, like foxes, deer, wolves and the like. They don’t like the water, and usually despise swimming. Amphipteres are actually pretty average when it comes to magic. They are no masters, but they definitely aren’t ignorant in the subject. It tends to be something they don’t often practice, however, and generally they will use their own skills. Amphipteres are quite smart, and diligent. They can be very ambitious creatures, similar to most western dragons. That being said, if they desired to learn magic, that capability is not beyond their reach.

[3] The Draconomicon Empty The Draconomicon: Lindwurms

Lindwurms
[3] The Draconomicon Lindwu10

Very similar to wyrms, these draconiformes are often mistake for the burrowing snake creatures. The one key distinguishing characteristic of lindwurms is that they always possess a pair of front legs. However, they lack a back pair of hind legs, and will either half slither, or- more commonly- fly through the air, as this is much more comfortable for them. While it is unusual, it is not uncommon for lindwurms to be born with wings. They have exceptional night vision, and both great burrowing speeds and flight speeds, though both lower than the burrowing speed of a wyrm and the flying speed of an amphiptere. All lindwurms come in a unique variety, some including fins, others covered from head to claw in spikes. Some even have multiple tails. Average heights usually range from 5-17 feet tall, with lengths running at about 2x their height, and (if applicable) wingspans of about 3 times their height. Lindwurms can live up to 1,000 years old.

TLDR; NORMAL LIMITS: Max height: 17 feet tall. Max length: 34 feet long. Max wingspan (if applicable): 51 feet wide (total).

NOTE: If you wish to have a lindwurm that exceeds the listed averages under your type, you may, but you need at least one strength listed under your application reflecting the advantages of that great size. For example: "Large Size: Due to this character's large size, they are more physically powerful than the average dragon, and are therefore largely more durable than the average draconiform."

MAXIMUM SIZE LIMITS: Max height: 22 feet tall. Max length: 44 feet long. Max wingspan (if applicable): 66 feet (total).

Aquatic Lindwurm
A rare kind of lindwurm, these creatures are found primarily in the water, and almost never have wings, though even rarer varieties do have the possibility. They sometimes have gills, and sometimes don’t, but are fully capable of breathing on land, and existing outside of the water. They are not very proficient magic wielders, and rely primarily on their own skills and abilities to get them by. Though, that isn’t much, seeing as lindwurms are not exactly a draconiform known for their magical capabilities. No aquatic or land dwelling lindwurm is born with magic, and if one were to learn it, they would have to be exceptionally intelligent and ambitious.

Terrestrial Lindwurm
The more well known kind of lindwurm, which is already rare, considering the fact most lindwurms aren’t the most well-known creatures, the terrestrial lindwurm is just as it sounds. It lives on land, and the rare species that have wings fly through the skies and mountains. Most lindwurms live in the forests, mountains, swamps, jungles, and sometimes savannahs and grasslands. They, like their aquatic brethren, are not at all very proficient in magic, and mostly stick with whatever inherent abilities they were born with.

[3] The Draconomicon Empty The Draconomicon: Notable Subspecies

Post by EmriTheUnstoppable Thu Apr 01, 2021 1:52 pm

------Western Dragons------

Name: Mammoth spiked ice dragon
Draconiforme type: Western dragon
Size: Ranges from 10 to 25 ft tall, length being 30 to 45 ft and wing span being 36 to 61 ft.

Habitat: They can be found anywhere due to their travelling tendencies but are most commonly found in the icy mountains and tundras of Nuira and beyond. In fact, the species itself is rare to come across in Nuira.
Diet: They're omnivores, they'll eat meat and herbs, though they mostly feast on fish.

Appearance: This species of dragon come with a bulky body, the bulk differing between the sexes. Their horn come in either crowns or occasionally singular spikes, they sometimes bend to the front of the head, giving them their names as the horns can look like tusks of a mammoth. They come with scale and fur, the fur can either cover their entire body completely or be jotted on the chest, neck, tail and legs. They have big paws like that of a polar bear, and ridged claws to give them better surface spread over the snow and ice. Mammoth spiked ice dragons come in rather pale blue to white colours, it's extremely rare for one to be born with a completely different colour over the common types they come in.

Abilities: They have the regular ice breathing abilities, Frost breath, ice shards, being able to use cryokenisis magic also is a common ability they have.
Strengths: Mammoth spiked ice dragons are able to use their raw strength to push boulders of a certain size and pick up tree trunks and logs.
Weaknesses: Their scales are fairly easy to slice through, this makes the species very vulnerable to the claws of other dragons and sharp objects like icicles.

Species Behavior:The mammoth spiked ice dragons almost act like elephants, they like to stick close to other dragons and can create extremely strong bonds with each other, The bond with the young of dragons are a prime example of the extreme lengths the species as a whole will go to protect them. They have their own mourning process when a dragon passes away. When dragons of these species find mates, they become mates for life, it is extremely difficult for them to find another mate after one of them dies.

------Eastern Dragons------

Sub-Species Common Name(s): Lesser eastern dragon, or the snake dragon

Habitat: Any region with cool but not frigid winters, basically can live anywhere temperatures go from -10 degrees Fahrenheit and up. They can tolerate intense heat as well as thriving in hot climates up to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Though these dragons prefer wet humid areas with lush vegetation.

Appearance: All aspects of this subspecies are nearly the same as regular eastern dragons, however their limbs may be very small or nearly absent, and they have no horns, antlers, spikes, or other hard adornments along their bodies and at the top of their heads. Rarely will small spikes be growing at the ends of their tails. They also have no wings whatsoever. They can have skin, scales, fur, feathers, or a mixture of these things at varying lengths with various colors.

Diet: These dragons are omnivores eating pretty much anything. Some even consume stone, clay, or other minerals.

Evolutionary Adaptations: These dragons evolved from the regular eastern dragon in order to better occupy large predator niches in thick dense forest, luscious jungle, and within smaller caves. Due to their length and thinness rather than bulk, and the shortening limbs they can reach into places that most other dragons of their length or height can't get into. They also have an increased flexibility allowing them to curl themselves up into a tight small space or corner away from danger. As long as they can fit their head into something their entire body should be able to follow. This is a double edged sword however as they can accidentally tie themselves up or around things on rare occasion if they are not mindful of their body and movements.

In a dense forest setting these dragons could slip through and hunt stealthily whereas most thicker larger dragons would be hitting trees, crushing trees and other vegetation, and otherwise making noise while going after frightened game. This species can make silent kills often times without their prey even noticing them until it's too late. Some have also been evolving venom glands much like snakes, though the venom is currently only useful to slow down other dragons. To smaller prey it can paralyze or even kill. A few can set their venom on fire, very shortly increasing the heat of their flame; though this act uses up all of their stored venom. It takes a few hours for venom to fill up their glands again. These dragons do still retain the ability to swim, fly, and use magic much like regular easterns.

Unfortunately, because it is a younger newer subspecies, their colors do not yet reflect their preferred environments. Thanks to their genetics they can be any color. For example, you might see a bright red or purple dragon easily in a jungle, or a blue dragon in a desert area. Perhaps in another couple thousand years or so the species will have fully diverged from regular easterns, causing groups in each habitat to have body colors closer to their home environments. Natural selection in the process.

Breeding: These dragons breed like any other dragon. However, a female can retain sperm and fertilize herself at a later date, years later even if she wished to.

Additionally, thanks to evolution, some females give birth to live young that are fully capable of taking care of themselves shortly after birth, while other females lay eggs. For egg laying females, some of them may produce eggs that once hatched can take care of themselves, while others may need to be taken care of until they grow and learn what they need to know about survival. An important note, whether a female lays eggs or gives live birth is determined by which bloodlines she came from. If she came from a line of lesser eastern females that laid eggs then she will lay eggs. The same can be said for live birth.

Also note, for babies coming from eggs, it depends on your bloodlines (as well as general health of the baby)  whether it will be fully functional and able to survive on its own. If you come from a line of dragons that hatched and were on their own (much like real life snakes and lizards) then you will also be the same way. The same is said for those who come from bloodlines where you start out totally helpless and need to be taught to survive.

Size:Their sizes are still within the regular eastern dragon range of size.

Examples of this species:
-Prasi's mother Rii was one of this species.
-Prasi's maternal grandmother was one of these species.

------Wyrms------

------Wyverns------

Nebula Wyvern

Location: Mountainous Areas, only between 20k and 30k feet.

Abilities:

Nebula Sight: This ability has no prowess other than the changing of their scales. Each Nebula Wyvern chooses a Nebula at birth. No Nebula is used by the same two Wyverns. From then, they grow to imitate that nebulas colors and patterning. The process used to imitate the nebula is similar to that of photosynthesis.

Plasma Blast: The Nebula Wyvern's only offensive ability lies in their plasma blast, that being her breath attack. It's composed exactly of what you might find inside of a star, and often explodes after a few seconds of contact with oxygen. These form as small pockets of heat inside their stomach, which they regurgitate. As they exit their throat, the heat of both the inside and the outside burns through the protective layer surrounding it, and causes it to explode once it becomes too thin, much like a balloon when filled with too much air. Their bodies can only make eight of them at a time, and they generally take about an hour to form.

Dangerous Saliva: A Nebula Wyvern's saliva is dangerous to all but their own kind. The poison is secreted from a sac on the underside of the throat and is the only reason the saliva is flammable. It comes with the severe weakness, however, of being able to catch fire if flame somehow touches one's mouth while it is open. Their mouths are generally more flame resistant than a humans', but not fire-proof in the slightest. One can easily get third-degree burns if a good hit to their mouth is made, and they can't access water to put the fire out. As such, one rarely uses this outside of hunting and safe situations. The poison in the saliva holds little function other than it's flammability. If they manage to lick an open wound, the poison can cause damage to the area around the wound, as well as the wound itself, but it would take ingestion of a large quantity of it for the poison to have any fatal effects.

Description: A group of elusive dragons, Nebula Wyverns are known for 2 things: their scales, and their solitude. Save mated pairs, Nebula Wyverns most often live alone, the biggest exception being the group that lived among the Vuari tribe.

When it comes to their scales, things get a bit complicated. From the moment they're hatched from their egg, Nebula Wyverns are intensely interested in the night sky. They choose one nebula, and for the rest of their life, this is the nebula they keep as a patron. Some dedicate their nebulas to gods, others worship their nebula as its own god, others view it as neither. Whichever way is chosen, there is no Nebula Wyvern that is without a nebula. The choosing is an instinctual action, and unavoidable.
