Burning Forges -Open- Empty Burning Forges -Open-

CRASH! BANG! CLATTER!

"Aaaargh! Blasted molds!"

The shout of pain and surprise bounced out of the forge and into the streets. A couple of dragons passed by and raised their eyebrows as smoke spilled out of the open door. The little brick building sat quietly on the corner, wedged between the street and the jewelry shop next to it. Black clouds drifted out of the holes in the roof and the windows in the side. The bystanders continued on their way, knowing nothing was wrong, as Coal tended to drop his things a lot.

The black dragon flapped his wings furiously at the smoking pit, cursing under his breath. After a few long moments, the flames receded back to their normal state. "Gaaah," Coal hissed as he reached gingerly for the sheet of silver that sat on the floor, tinged orange from the fire. He picked it up with his talons and examined it, not bothered by the heat. He'd started making a fine chain for a necklace, but now the entire thing was bent out of shape from the fall. "Ugh, the gods hate me," the male grumbled. He plunged the sheet into the wide trough of water next to the forge -fire safety and all that- and set it down onto the table with a sigh. He buried his face in his wings and groaned.

"You alright, Papa?" a high pitched voice startled him out of his wits. Coal jumped, teeth clenching in fear, but he relaxed once he recognized the little ebony hatchling sitting among his tools. Trotting over to him, she glanced at the broken sheet of silver and hopped onto his shoulder, nuzzling into his neck. "You could give it another shot," she suggested, trying to encourage him.

Coal smiled softly and raised a talon, scratching her under the chin like he would a cat. "I'll try again later, little angel. Papa just needs to clean up," he said, gesturing to the spilled water and scattered materials that littered the floor. He'd tripped whilst reaching for a tool to mold the silver, and had crashed into the trough, stumbled over it, lost the sheet and fell headfirst into the side of the forge. Lucky you didn't fall INTO it, he thought with a shiver. Even though he was a fire dragon, it was still rather unpleasant, being unprepared for such intense heat.

Ember giggled and sat back. "That was funny, when you fell over," she snickered, holding a wing over her snout. Coal looked at her, arching a brow. "Was it now?" he asked, smirking. Ember stood up, giggling as she stepped back. "I need to teach you a lesson, young lady!" Coal exclaimed, reaching for her. The hatchling leaped over his talons and onto the table, squealing as she raced away. She didn't get very far, because Coal grabbed her midair when she tried to jump down.

Turning her onto her back in his arms, Coal began to tickle her belly. "Grrrr! The tickle monster is coming to get you!" he growled. Ember squealed and cackled, writhing as she pushed desperately at his talons. "Nuuuhuhuh Papahahahaha! Nahat the tickle monstehehehehr!" she exclaimed, before shrieking in laughter as her father blew on her stomach.

Coal's bad mood dissipated as he listened to his little girl's laugh. For a few moments, he forgot about everything in the world as he played with his darling daughter. His eyes shone in sheer adoration.

Burning Forges -Open- Empty Re: Burning Forges -Open-

Post by Solarlight and Darksky Fri Feb 02, 2018 4:05 pm

This was BAD! This was really, really bad! Solarlight and Darksky both looked down at what use to be an important tool, a strength tester for different materials, to the Scholars that raised them. All they were doing was some magic practice. Darksky hit her foot on a table, and accidentally hit it with her Dark Magic. Now it was on the floor of their den, broken. The black scaled dragoness gave her light scaled brother a worried look.

”I really screwed up!” Solar just looked at his sister, then the tool.

”We can fix it.” Sky just sighed at his response, shaking her head.

”Really?”

”Ok. You have a better idea? It’s not like we know anyone who could fix this.” The dragoness thought for a moment, looking back into the pairs few trips between their home, and where the scholars did their studying. Then it hit her like a warriors talons.

”There’s a smith we pass all the time. I bet whoever runs it can fix this, then we can do the tweaks to get it back to normal.” Solarlight was skeptical at first. The smith she spoke of worked with jewelry from what he could tell, but they didn’t really have any other ideas. He then smiled as he went to lift one of the pieces.

”Ok then. Let’s get moving.”

The pair then made the trip to the smith’s shop, catching the usual glances, stares, and under breath comments as they hurried to the shop. They had become use to all this, but that didn’t mean it went unnoticed. Darksky especially noticed it, keeping herself a bit lower the Solarlight.

After a decent trip, they finally made it to the smith’s shop. It was a pretty nice place, and they could hear something happening. They heard the playful, high pitched laughter of a hatchling, one probably being tickled or played with by a parent. Solarlight and Darksky slowly walked in, honestly worried about what those inside would think of them. The white scaled dragon then called out.

”Hello?”

Burning Forges -Open- Empty Re: Burning Forges -Open-

Post by Caramina Fri Feb 02, 2018 11:11 pm

Caramina had been getting into elaborate head armour lately, and had not been able to stop thinking about it. Could you blame her? She loved pretty things so, and helmets were the perfect thing to weave a design onto. Not knitting, that was too gentle. She looked for something that would hold a deadly grace, that could intimidate and fascinate. And so, with inspiration a fire that infused energy into her movements, she had sketched out a design that she thought would be nice to be made solid, made real.

With that in mind, she headed towards the only forge she knew of in the entire Stormcaller territory, anticipation hurrying her steps. What would the blacksmith think? she wondered as she approached her destination, but her attention was quickly diverted from mysterious mask-like helmets when she saw plumes of black smoke billowing from the forge, spilling out in uncontrolled waves of hazy darkness. Worried, she hesitated, unsure whether she should go in. Was there a fire going on?

Spotting a two-headed dragon enter the shop, Cara waited for them to run out screaming for help. When that didn't happen, she ducked her head and slipped through the rather low doorway. There she squinted, eyes watering, through the grey smoke, and managed to catch vague dragon-like figures. One being the two-headed dragon she'd seen enter, standing a few steps in front of Cara, and beyond ... She heard a high pitched scream of laughter, accompanied by a lower timbre of an adult male's, and smiled softly to herself.

They were all shorter than she was, Cara noted as the smoke flowed out and her vision cleared. Not for the first time, she cursed her height and slouched down a little, all grace and dignity thrown out the window. "Hello," she greeted cheerfully, nodding to the twins (on which her gaze lingered a bit too long, curiosity and surprise lighting her gaze) and the blacksmith with his child. "I'm glad this forge isn't burning down, I got rather alarmed when I saw the smoke... Anyway, I wanted to show you this little design of a helmet I made, maybe you could-? Oh, no, I'm sorry, I should wait for my turn!" She grinned apologetically at the twins.

Burning Forges -Open- Empty Re: Burning Forges -Open-

Ember wiggled desperately in his talons, giggling and squealing. Deciding to grant her mercy, he ceased his tickle attack and his daughter curled up against his chest, panting. "Now then. What do you say to your darling Papa?" he teased.

Ember stuck her tongue out at him. "You're old and grey!" she responded, tail flicking as she raised her paws in anticipation of what was to come. Coal gasped in mock horror, then made a 'grrr' noise and started tickling her again.

That is, until a tentative voice broke through the atmosphere. "Hello?" the dragon said. The pair froze, Coal turning around to see a pair of ...twin dragons. For a few moments, the dragon froze, blinking rapidly as he tried to figure out why they were in his forge.

Oh yeah, the shop's open! he thought. He stepped forward, offering them a friendly smile and bow. "Hello there, sir and ma'am! Welcome to my shop! What can I do for you this fine day?" he asked, putting on his 'friendly shop owner' voice. He placed Ember on the ground and ushered her away. The tiny dragonet leaped up onto the table and observed through twinkling eyes as he spoke to the pair. For a moment, his eyes lingered on where they joined, but otherwise he gave no indication of acknowledging their... species? Condition? he had no idea.

Ember stared in wonder at their shared body. She'd never seen anything like it! Knowing Papa needed the money, she held back from asking questions like; were you born like that? Do you guys have different breath attacks? He'd always warned her not to frighten off customers.

A few moments later, a white dragoness entered the shop. Coal beamed at her, bowing to her as well. he tilted his head and chuckled at her concern for the forge. Ah yes... that was a bit embarrassing. Hearing Ember snickering, he gave her a stern but still playful frown. His eyes then widened at her request. She'd designed a helmet herself? Well then!

He wasn't an expert armorer, but he could do it. "That's alright! Just let me speak to the gentleman and lady here and I'll be with you then, ma'am," he responded, tail swishing behind him. He grinned at the twins. "What can I do for you?" he asked.

Burning Forges -Open- Empty Re: Burning Forges -Open-

Post by Solarlight and Darksky Sat Feb 03, 2018 7:30 am

The two were surprised by just how nice the older, dark colored dragon was being, both giving him a smile in return. It was a nice change of pace for the usual attention they got, but Darksky still kept her head lower out of shyness. It didn’t help that she noticed that smith eye were she and Solar met, but there was something that brightened her mood. The little hatchling sitting on a table, probably the owners daughter.

Then, before Solar could answer the shop owner’s question another dragon entered. She was bigger than anyone else there, which made Sky more nervous. It didn’t help that she kept staring for longer then either twin was comfortable with, but Solar still answered her hello with ”Hi.” Sky, on the other paw, simply nodded, still nervous.

Even so, both were interested when The dragoness said she designed her own helmet. It was also nice that she was willing to let them go ahead. Solarlight smile showing the smith the broken tool. ”Me and my sister had an... accident and broke this strength measuring tool. Do you think you can fix it?”

Burning Forges -Open- Empty Re: Burning Forges -Open-

Post by Artemise Sun Feb 04, 2018 2:55 am

The blacksmith seemed to have been unaware of twin's presence, evident when the latter's greeting cut off the playful growl that had begun to rumble in the depths of Coal's throat. The male's head whipped around and he blinked rapidly, surprised, clearly wondering about the sudden appearance of the two-headed dragon in his forge. At last he seemed to remember that he was a blacksmith in a forge open to the public, and put his daughter aside, a polite mask appearing.

Caramina's eyes tracked the movements of the little hatchling, who nimbly scampered up onto a nearby table and watched with their keen eyes the two-headed dragon. She quickly snatched her attention back to Coal as she was bowed to, and she returned the favour, folding her paws in front as she did so. She spoke of the smoke she'd billowing out of the forge, and joined in Coal's chuckle with a relieved hum.

She was pleased at the surprise and interest that her mention of the helmet was receiving, and smiled perhaps a bit too enthusiastically. Tapping her feet against the ground, Caramina waited. She looked up at Ember and smiled. "You have beautiful eyes," she remarked, tilting her head invitingly, hoping Ember would come to her. It was the truth, however. The child had the eyes of her father, but they were unlined by worry or age, merely lit by an inquisitive light that Cara liked. The scales on Ember's back gleamed, a healthy hue of black, and she sported a pretty bronze underbelly.

Caramina held up the scroll that contained her design. "Wanna see?"

Burning Forges -Open- Empty Re: Burning Forges -Open-

Post by Athena Wed Feb 07, 2018 5:01 am

The joined dragons, who were years younger than him, seemed friendly enough, but the twin with the midnight black scales was a tad more timid. She kept her eyes, which reminded him the soft winter sun, adverted and her head bowed. When the elegant, long-bodied lady entered the shop, she didn't even return the greeting. He felt bad, since she was clearly uncomfortable.

The twins held out a funny looking object. After a few seconds of examining it with his eyes, Coal realized it was a tool. He hesitated. Molding gems and ores was more his talent, but he supposed he could fix it. He gave them a smile and nodded. "I'll do my best. It could take a day or two though. What's it made out of?" he asked. It was almost possible to hear the gears turning in his head as he thought about boiling points and the different tools he would need. With a polite nod to Caramina, he beckoned the too further into the forge.

Ember, feeling Caramina's eyes on her, turned her head to look at her. To the hatchling, she was very pretty. She looked like she was made of moonlight, her scales shimmering like little glaciers. Unlike her dad, she looked almost fragile, like glass, ready to shatter at any moment.

The hatchling watched her father depart, then beamed at Caramina's compliment. She gave her a bashful smile, ducking her head and curling her tail around herself. "Thanks," she said. At her question, she nodded and ran to the edge of the table and leaped off.

The forge had a couple of chains hanging down from random spots. They were actually a safety feature, in case a fire started. If the flames began to spread, the chains could be yanked to release a bucketful of water. Thankfully, Ember was still too light to actually activate the mechanism, so she swung across the room and then let go, landing on the shelf next to Caramina's head. Twisting around, she peered at the design with twinkling eyes.

"Ooooh, that's pretty!" she praised, tail wagging. "Papa will love making this!" she met Caramina's eyes with a grin. "He's the BEST in the world.
He'll make this, easy!"
even though Coal reminded her frequently that he was NOT the best, -and told her to NOT go around saying that- his daughter felt that he was the best smith in all of Nuira.

"Wanna see some other stuff we make? We make tons of necklaces and earrings and things," she offered. "I can be your tour guide!" she added, already comfortable with Cara's presence.

Coal, meanwhile, was setting up the forge. He preferred to use the actual fire pit as little as possible, but since he was going to be fixing an actual tool, he'd need it. He started stoking the fire, throwing coals into the pit so it began to smoke. The black clouds drifted out of the huge window in the roof.

"Is it broken in two completely?
Or is it just a part that needs fixing?"
he asked, casting a glance at his daughter. He smiled fondly, before returning his attention to his customer.. s.

Solar smile, though he nudged his sister’s neck with his own. It was his way of telling her not to worry, which seemed to help some, but Sky was still nervous. She felt like everyone was staring at them. Not that they were, but it was how she felt. Either way, she seemed to ease up as her and her twin followed the smith into the forge. As the did, Solar did his best to answer the older dragon.

”Hardened steel, I think. But the may be different then the actual part that does the work.”

It was then that the white scaled dragon noticed the dragoness with the mane talking to the smith’s hatchling. He had to admit, it was an adorable sight. Both twins then smiled, and Solarlight let out a small chuckle, when she said her father was the world’s best blacksmith. While they couldn’t really relate to the sentiment, both thought it was nice to hear.

Then, after prepping the forge, the smith ask how the tool was broken. Darksky slowly placed the two pieces on a table before let out a nervous response.

”It’s.... The whole thing’s snapped in two.”

Burning Forges -Open- Empty Re: Burning Forges -Open-

Post by Artemise Sat Feb 10, 2018 8:25 pm

The edges of Cara's lips lifted in a smile as Ember gracefully received her compliment, and she did a mock bow, her mane falling forward to obscure her vision. Grumbling, she straightened and flicked the strands back, and eyed the direction in which Coal and the twins had disappeared through, the latter's name she didn't know yet and was planning to.

There were chains hanging down from seemingly random locations in the room, their purpose unknown to Cara, but to Ember it was probably a method of crossing the room. She did so deftly, latching onto one chain which would move forward with her momentum; she would let go and arc through the air to land on another chain, and this would repeat until Ember arrived at her destination. Caramina watched this with a sort of horrified fascination, fearing the moment where Ember would fall and injure herself.

But Ember was no newbie to this, and soon she was perched on the shelf beside Cara's delicate little head. She applauded for the hatchling, commenting, "That was awesome, but it scared the heck out of me." She laughed and unfurled the scroll, the reason why Ember had even performed those fancy swinging tricks in the first place. The parchment was clean, crisp and white, though it was peppered with lines and dents where she'd accidentally held it too hard.

The ink was stark against the white of the parchment, revealing two sketches of a helmet with hasty shading. One showed a side view, and the other from the front, both with different lightings. The mask had a slightly pointy snout, with openings for the eyes that swept backwards gracefully lined with messy swirls crisscrossing each other in a sort of chaotic harmony. "Thank you~" came the expected response to the compliment, and Cara "hmm?"ed. "Of course he's the best. That's why I came here." It was not the truth, but Ember didn't need to know that.

"Sure, I'd love for you to show me around."
