Character Creation Template Empty Character Creation Template

Post by Scortia Wed Sep 07, 2016 5:32 pm

REQUIREMENTS:

1. You MUST use our character creation template, found below, your character MUST be a dragon, and your character's size MUST fall within the listed size limits, found here. NOTE: There are different size limits for different types (western dragons, eastern dragons, wyverns, etc) so make sure you're looking at the correct limits.

2. Put "WIP" in your application's title if it's unfinished. This is to prevent confusion so that staff members don't waste their time attempting to grade an unfinished application.

3. You can only begin role-playing your character on the site after they have gotten TWO approvals from staff members. However, you may play your character on the Discord server without getting both approvals, as those roleplays are non-canon in regards to official site lore.

4. Your application MUST be readable. We're not asking for college level essays or anything like that, but asking you to run it through a grammar/spelling checker is in no way shape or form unreasonable. Additionally, massive blocks of text can be ridiculously hard read, so keep your paragraphs UNDER 10 lines of text.

Staff reserve the right to not grade your app until you meet these requirements.

TIPS:

1. Delete the parentheses (the bits like this) from the template when you're done. They merely serve as guidelines and should not be included in the final app.

2. Do not touch the words in square brackets, or edit the square brackets themselves! Square brackets are: [ ].

3. Staff are grading your app for free and have their own lives, so please be patient even if the process is a little slow.

The amount of effort you put into crafting your app translates into how quickly it will be approved. A shoddy app is off-putting and will likely take longer for us to review.

4. On that note! When you first submit your application to be graded, please ping @Admin and @Moderator in our grading request channel on discord! This lets us know that your application is ready to be graded, and I will add it to our to-do list. ADDITIONALLY: If your application has not been graded and an entire week has passed, please bump the topic/ping staff again! We all have our own lives, so we have likely either been too busy to handle it, or didn't realize there was a new application waiting.

USEFUL LINKS:

1. Dragon Tribe Information (click to go to link) For deciding which Tribe you want your dragon in, but being part of one is not mandatory: You may choose to be a rogue instead. Current tribes include: The Kaamil (The Ice Tribe), The Ki'Sha (The Desert Tribe), The Lakara (The Ocean Tribe), The Stormcallers (The Tradewinds Tribe), The Valeterrene (The Swamp Tribe), The Vuari (The Mountain Tribe), and The Xoya (The Shadow Tribe). Each of these links to the most recent edition of that tribe's lore, and will be updated when new tribe topics with updated information arise. If you have further questions about a tribe's lore that are not covered on their post, feel free to contact the tribe leaders, ask in the Help Section, or ask on our Discord server!

2. The Draconomicon (click to go to link). This topic lists the types of dragons here in DH and, more importantly, their age and height limitations. Your character MUST fall within these size standards, but there are different size standards depending on which type of dragon you choose. Additionally, your character MUST fall into one of the listed categories. Anthro-style characters are unfortunately not allowed here. Others will be examined on a case-by-case basis, so please contact a staff member if you have any questions!

Anything larger than the maximum size limit for your type of dragon will not be approved.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is the difference between Strengths and Abilities/Magic?
Strengths are notable characteristics about your dragon, how strong they are, how smart, how flexible, how fast, ect.  Abilities and Magic, on the other hand, are notable things your characters can do.

But- what's the difference between Magic and Abilities then?
The main difference between the two is that abilities have a biological cause. So, for example: fire breath (and other breath weapons), created from a gland in the throat; camouflage scales, with the character's scales shifting color like a chameleon; or the ability to breathe underwater, granted to the character through gills on their neck. Think about how different creatures have evolved to have different adaptations based on their environments! Magic, on the other hand, is something unexplainable. Things like creating storms, throwing fireballs, manipulating plants, etc. would all fall under the category of magic.

TL;DR- If it can be explained by science and caused by something in their body, it's an ability. Otherwise, it's magic.

What are the requirements for Strengths/Weaknesses?
The TL;DR is that you always need more weaknesses than strengths, with one more weakness than strength at the very least.[/u] Try to avoid only giving your character situational or circumstantial weaknesses, such as an intolerance of the cold, as they come into play only in very specific scenarios. However, pairing these with more general weaknesses is acceptable, especially if it is relevant to your character's species (for example, water-based dragons would naturally be weak to fire.) A general rule of thumb is that if your weakness is applicable in most combat scenarios, it is good to go.

Also, for the sake of balancing your character, you must pair every physical strength with a physical weakness, and mental strengths with mental weaknesses. Note that character flaws =/= weaknesses! While they can be, such as being impulsive or having a hot temper (which lends itself to provocation, thus prompting rash attacks), traits like naivety do not count unless you are able to somehow relate it to combat. For new roleplayers, we recommend simply sticking to physical weaknesses, such as easily shattered bones, poor stamina, etc.

What does "bumping" a topic mean?
Bumping a topic is when you REPLY to the topic in question with a post that just says "bump"! This "bumps" the topic up to the top of the recent topics list, and is usually used to let staff members know that your application is ready to be looked at again, or to gently remind the folks that you're RPing with that the topic in question still needs a reply!

What if I want to edit my app after it has been approved?
Well, in that case, ping/DM/PM a staff member! We'll pull your application out of the approved section so you can edit it; AKA your app is now "out for edits''. When you're done editing, let staff know by bumping your application and, after looking it over to make sure all your changes are fine, we'll re-approve it! WHEN EDITING- Please, for the love of all things, keep a changelog for everything you've changed. You have no idea how helpful that is for staff looking over your changes. It'll help your app get re-approved faster too since we won't need to scour the whole thing looking for tiny changes!

What languages are there?
Well, the first language you should know about is Universal, and it's basically our version of English. It's usually assumed that most, if not all, characters know Universal since it's such a widely used language. Other than that, most tribes have a couple languages that are specific just to them, but here's a handy dandy list for easy viewing (plus a little explanation of the lore that goes with them):

The Kaamil: Kenarun, Urisa and Katysesin. Kenarun is the common language of the Kaamil and sounds very similar to Universal, but was created long before Universal was. Urisa, on the other hand, is the spoken code of the Kaamil, and is one of the most difficult languages to learn due to the frequent double-meanings of its words and phrases. Ex: "Furshunken cain Lori Alors Anug yur Nactmag!" = "Greetings my new friend among us!" /Or it could mean = "Beware of the enemy among us friend!" The third and final language of the Kaamil region is known Katysesin. It's a dead language created by an extinct species of dragons known as the Mirrors, and can be most commonly found within the terrifying Mirror tombs dotting the icy tundra. However, it is very rare to find someone who can understand this dead language thanks to both the difficult nature of the language itself, and efforts to keep knowledge of the language restricted to Kaamilian scholars.

The Ki'sha: Ki'shin/Ki'shan Sign, and Ga'ar. Ki'shin is the common language of the Ki'sha, and is a very smooth and fluid-sounding language. Many of its words don't translate well to Universal, as the words themselves have different connotations and contain various descriptive adjectives that can be hard to translate. Ki'shin also contains a silent sign-language portion, which is often used during hunts, or other situations where speech is ill-advised. Ga'ar, however , is almost the exact opposite. Ga'ar is a very dead language that predates all known languages, and is the common root of almost all known languages. It sounds like someone is choking on glass while trying to speak it, and feels like it too, at least for new speakers. Its use is almost entirely restricted to researchers and various explorers trying to decipher ancient ruins.

The Lakara: Aquatic. Aquatic is a language that can either be seen or heard. Some draconiformes have the ability to light up their body or will create a sequence of bubbles, both of which are acceptable forms of Aquatic communication. Because those require the listener to be watching, and some dragons are unable to communicate visually above water, there is also an audible component of the language. Dragoniformes make sounds similar to underwater mammals, in the same pattern as they would if speaking visually. Because there are many different ways to communicate in Aquatic, it can be a very difficult language for someone to pick up later in life. (Aquatic Example with glow and sound) For the longest time, Aquatic was not a written language, but when Queen Zolt reclaimed the throne, she brought back the knowledge of how to make waterproof ink. With this, the Atacrtylix have been developing a written version of Aquatic. Example: “Dorcum Veris: Su annutrin eccem nodis, Foccima Zolt Atlau, filea o Foccima Alkaline n Foccime Coral od renus Lacara, ih potitutin aeh Occima Lacara. Foconcrum veris peract petmus om Moen Reguli.”

The Stormcallers: The Stormcallers have Scholars and their library specifically designed to teach members of the tribe as many languages as possible. There is no language known only to Stormcallers, although they can use the languages of other tribes if they wish to have private conversations while others are present. Most Stormcallers are bilingual or more, and if they aren’t then they can go to the Twilight Palace and study to learn new languages there.

The Valeterrene: Vlow and Arretiz. Vlow is a language not so unlike the Lakara's aquatic language in that it is used when dragons are underwater to communicate with each other. Many of Valeterrene's inhabitants speak this as well as their tribe's other main language because the tribe is located by many water sources like rivers, swamps, lakes, and ponds. This language can be used with the same letter system as the Arretiz language, but does not have its own written form. Arretiz is the tribe's main language which is generally used above water. This language is both written as well as spoken and even has a number system associated with it. Both aquatic and terrestrial members of the tribe use this and all hatchlings who have grown up in the tribe are taught this by their parents, teachers, and elders. This language also adorns artwork as well as historical stories and scenes sculpted or painted onto rock walls of their tunnels and caves. The language is as much a way to communicate as it is to show one's artistic skills off.

The Vuari: Vuarian. Vuarian is the common language of the Vuari, as well as Universal. The languages of other tribes are also taught in Vuarish schools, should a dragon wish to learn about them.

The Xøya: Xøyan. According to historical records, Xøyan dates back several thousand years, and has undergone countless alterations since its creation. Xoyan is frequently described as “raspy” and “harsh” to the ear as its syllables are short, fast, and guttural, with the vast majority of its sounds being produced in the back of the throat. However, contrary to popular belief, Xoyan is not actually a difficult language to learn as its syllables are clearly and deliberately enunciated in speech. What you see is what you get. Interestingly, how Xoyan is spoken varies across Xoya, depending on one’s location as well as their rank. Street thugs, juveniles, and generally those from the lower class tend to exploit and exaggerate the guttural sounds of the Xoyan language to sound tougher and meaner, while those of higher rank tend to soften these sounds. Those from different regions speak different dialects, which offer variations in syntax, lingo, syllable emphasis, and the pronunciation of specific words.
