Nezzera
Personality and the Basics
Name: Nezzera
Pronunciation: Nez-errah
Gender: F e m a l e
Type: Wyvern
Species: Trench Leviathan
Age: 22 [Young Adult]
Date of Birth: July 6th
Personality: Nezzera is the life of the party. She's armed with a sharp wit, undeniable charm, and a force of charisma so strong that most can't help cracking a smile, even when she's holding them at knife-point. Oh- Didn't I mention? Nezzera is a pirate. "Navigator for the Mirrored Fang!" as she'll no doubt tell you within 5 minutes of meeting you. She's- really not the best at the whole "keeping secrets" thing, but she makes up for that with her boundless enthusiasm! Nez is an eternal optimist, and it's incredibly hard to get her down. Almost ridiculously so. She'll find a silver lining in any cloud, and proceed to rob you blind for it. But- despite her, ah- thieving tendencies, Nezzera really isn't a bad dragon. Or- she doesn't view herself as such anyway. Piracy is always a bit, ah- "loosey goosey with the law", as she'd put it, but hey- Everyone needs to make a living!
Hobbies: Nezzera has a number of hobbies, and is constantly picking up new ones from all the new places she visits. But- really? She'd try anything you put in front of her. Her current favorites include, but aren't limited to: whittling, practicing swordplay, sampling new and different foods, collecting various flowers and growing them all over the ship. She also loves fishing, swimming, diving, exploring new places, ah- "rescuing valuables", and just generally causing well-meant chaos.
Likes: Sailing, water, stars, all flowers, other sailing ships, any and all items of value, sweets, exotic foods, otters, axolotls, relieving grouchy people of their belongings, and her family. Additionally, Nezzera's favorite things are things that you can't have underwater without ruining them. So things like bread, pastries, paper goods, scented candles, etc...
Dislikes: Nez doesn't dislike many things, but- when she does- she does so with a passion. As of now, her "To Be Avoided At All Costs" list includes: Grouchy people, eating seaweed, slimy water plants, needless fighting, and sea gulls.
Fears: Due to her history, Nez is DEEPLY afraid of being abandoned, and of being forgotten. She's also afraid of being trapped/restrained against her will, and that she'll never be good enough, but that really just feeds into her fear of being abandoned.
Quote: "The name's Nez! Nezzera if we're bein' all fancy, an' Nezzie to my friends. Navigator o' the Mirrored Fang, finest vessel to ever sail the seas, and I shall be relieving you of all 'o your valuables this fine evenin'!" #ffcc33
Origin, Culture, and Family
Place of Origin: Nezzera's egg was left next to a hydrothermal vent, deeeeeep in the ocean. She hatched alone and scared, and would live there for the first few months of her life.
Tribe: Lakara
Position: She's the Navigator of the Mirrored Fang, and that's all she needs in life.
Language: Universal, Aquatic, and some rough Kishin she picked up during her brief stint in captivity and time spent along the docks of a Kishan port city.
Home: Wherever the Mirrored Fang is currently docked.
Parents: Unknown. Adopted by Zolt when she was very young. Like- r e a l l y young, still in her biting phase.
Siblings: By blood? Unknown. But Fille is like a younger sister to her, and Ryujin like an older sister.
Relatives: None that she knows of by blood, her found family consists of the crew of the Mirrored Fang.
Mate: N o p e
Offspring: N/A
History:
- Backstory c:
- They're coming.
The dragoness frantically darted along the ocean floor, plunging deeper and deeper into the ocean depths. 'I can't- I can't let them take her-' Her heart was racing, filling her ears with the sound of rushing blood as each moment of her life flashing through her mind with a blood-spattered clarity that nearly took her breath away.A life: young, innocent and happy.Ba-dumA love: new, precious, and naive.Ba-dum
Her chest seized up for a moment as she choked back a sob, blood leaking from her gills at an alarming rate as she leaned against a rocky shelf. The ocean plateau ended abruptly before her, nothing but clear blue ocean water for miles ahead, and a steep plunge into the dark depths below. She was badly wounded, but she felt the pain in her heart far more acutely than the pain in her body. She could still see his face; kind eyes, like a welcoming hearth after a long day, scales like the sea after a storm, a burning passion for life that knew no bounds. She could almost hear him laugh, a laugh like the ocean breeze on a warm day- a laugh that cut off abruptly, replaced with that horrible gurgling as the slaver's spear punctured his lungs. She had to close her eyes for a moment, gasping, as a pain so sharp and intense that it felt like she had been stabbed herself suddenly wracked her body- a gasping that soon turned to coughing, a deep, wet cough, that sent more blood drifting in the water around her face.Ba-dumLife, love, happiness.Ba-dum
Day. Weeks. Months. They were happy together, living a rose-tinted life, filled to the brim with the overwhelming joy of new love.Ba-dum
Family, friends, celebration; she still remembered their wedding night, the full moon glowing brightly overhead, and the wreaths of moonflower tying together their intertwined talons like miniature stars of their own. The food, the wine, the dancing. It was the happiest moment of her life.Ba-dumI'm so- so sorry-Ba-dum
The raid, the screams, the cries: the sounds of her friends and family being slaughtered like animals at the first sign of any resistance.
The slavers weren't discreet, they never tried to hide their intentions. Why would they? They didn't think of their quarry as dragons. As sentient beings. No, they were commodities. Merchandise. Goods, to be sold off once they hit the Ki'shan ports. After all, the Ki'shans were notorious for their slaves. Sure, they had their excuses. It was "earned", the "lesser offenders" could "earn" their freedom, but- Who would go through the effort to verify the chain of ownership? It was easy enough to forge papers, claiming a life-long sentence to slavery. Bribe a few officials, forge some papers, and voila, instant profit.
A single slave is a significant profit, so a boatload of them- and exotic slaves no less- It was no wonder they were partying that night.
The light, the music, the raucous laughter- her stomach turned, just at the memory of the fetid mix of ale, rotten fish and... other odors that accompany many bodies crammed into a tiny space. The jeering faces of their captors leering down at them through the metal grate- She could still taste the blood that spattered across her face when the first of the slavers died. The first few died quickly, easily, but- once the slavers realized what was happening- the tides swiftly turned the escape attempt into a massacre.
She took a shuttering breath, her gills fluttering weakly as she clutched the egg to her chest, trying to banish the bloody memories. It was warm; warm and alive and free. And she was determined to keep it that way. She was with-egg when they were captured, somehow managing to keep it a secret from her captors, and to keep it hidden once it was laid. She was laid, she reminded herself, clutching the egg closer and feeling it's warmth. Her egg- her child- her daughter- If she didn't survive- No, she had to. Any other option was too horrible to even consider. All those deaths- her own impending death soon to join their ranks- everything would have been in vain.
Sudden, muted flashing behind her broke her out of her reverie. She'd waited too long, they were closing in. She could feel her strength waning, she'd already gone so far- What did she have left to give? The answer became clear to her then, like a shape looming out of the mist. She had only one thing left to give.
She wasted no time, fashioning the satchel she had managed to salvage on the way out into a little harness, and the bag itself into a miniature parachute. She knew that she wouldn't survive, but- if her child could- she knew she'd die in peace.
But the flashes of communication were getting brighter, she had no time left to lose. She swam out over the great chasm, clutched the egg close one last time, and released it.Goodbye my love
She broke from her cover, swimming up, and up- a cry- a cloud of blood- and she was gone.~~~
The egg drifted gently downward, unaffected by the bloodshed just a few meters above it. Unbothered by the sharks, drawn to the scene. Down, down, down... Drifting ever downward into the darkness below.
The water grew steadily darker, and the water grew steadily colder, causing the unborn dragonet to flinch and squirm within her egg. She needed warmth, she was still too young to survive on her own. If something didn't change...
But, as she drifted down, something did change. The water started to grow warmer. It was still pitch black outside, not that it mattered to the childe within, but strange upwards water currents began to buffet the egg. It drifted on these currents, the little parachute eventually getting snagged on the base of one of these hydrothermal vents, and trapping the egg it carried snuggly against the side of the vent. The little dragonet relaxed, content once more. There she remained; safe, secure, and drifting in comfortable unconsciousness.~~~
3 months later, the egg hatched. One moment, it was an ordinary silt-covered rock on the seafloor, then came the tapping, attracting a couple of slow-moving fish, then the egg collapsed inwards, spilling the tiny dragonet out onto the silt with a barely audible squeak. It took her a little bit to shake all the goop off of herself, and fully extricate herself from her egg. That done, she looked around, suddenly struck by how.. wrong this was. She had never known anyone, but- there, just a few minutes old- she felt so inexplicably alone.
The next several months were rough for the newborn. She was small, soft, and inexperienced, and yet somehow had to figure out how to take care of herself, or risk starvation. She flirted with that boundary several times during this period, but- even young- it takes a while to starve a dragon, and she quickly discovered the bounty of food to be found at the vents from which she'd hatched.
This went on for nearly 8 months, and the baby grew quickly, and learned even faster. Until- the day she met her first dragon.
She had strayed further than she meant to from her vents, chasing down an illusive fish that was just fast enough to keep her attention. The water had lightened considerably by the time the child lost sight of the fish. She glanced around, not sure of where she was, until a shape in the water caught her eye. It was her fish! But- her fish was coming back towards her? And not just her fish, there were countless others being swept her way. The dragonet realized too late the danger she was in, frantically trying to flee as the fishing net closed around her and dragged her towards the brightness above at an alarming pace.
Breaching the surface of the sea was- an unpleasant experience for the youngling, to say the least. The child had never breathed air before, so the process of going from her watery home into the strangely- not-wet place was excruciating. She had lungs, yes, but- having never used them before- it was like being born all over again. Or, rather, being born for the first time. But before she could even recover from her retching and coughing fit, she felt the net give way under her feet. Without warning, she was suddenly tumbling amidst a waterfall of silvery bodies, falling into a darkened pit and hitting a hard surface with a meaty thud and an outraged hiss of pain. The bruised and battered child darted into a dark corner, nursing her bruises, but afraid to make a noise and call attention to her presence. Above, she heard what she instinctively identified as "voices", but as for what they meant, that was far beyond her comprehension.
There she stayed, for what seemed like an eternity. Hiding amidst the scent of fish, stagnant water, and mildew for a full day, before the ship finally docked. The sudden increase of noise was what caught her attention first. Then the hatch swung open, flooding the hold with a light so bright it blinded her. A sudden murmur of voices erupted above, "Is tha what I think it is?" "Ya got a kid?" "Blimey, I knew you were bad fishers, but this is a 'ole new level-" "bAH, SHUDDUP, AIN'T LIKE Y'ALL WOULD'VE DONE NOTHIN' DIFFERENT-" A conversation that of course meant nothing to the child, merely terrifying noises as the creatures above debated her fate.
After a moment's deliberation, the hatch slammed shut with a decisive clang, and a smaller secondary hatch creaked open as a large figure slowly and carefully clomped down the stairs. A green wyvern paused hesitantly at the base of the stairs, his yellow eyes piercingly bright in the darkness of the hold as he slowly approached the child's hiding place, his wings spread wide in an attempt to corral her. "Alrigh' kid, I dun like this any more than you do," he grumbled, "But c'mere, we'll getcha a proper home, some food-" Whatever he was going to say next was abruptly cut off as the tiny hatchling shot out of the darkness, ducked between his legs, and was halfway up the stairs before he even had a chance to turn around. "oI- THEY'RE- SHE'S- CATCH HER-" The wyvern shouted, whirling around and tripping over himself in his rush to clamber up the stairs after her.
The child burst through the trapdoor into immediate agony. It was so bright- She had never felt a pain like this before, light so bright it made her instinctively reach to cover her eyes with a cry of pain, but she couldn't stop now, not when the shouting voices were getting louder. She felt more than saw the footsteps getting closer behind her, and blindly bolted forwards on instinct alone, tumbling down a sloped surface and scrambling to her feet. It was so bright, and so loud- She tried to run again and immediately crashed into a wooden cart, spilling the flowers it sold all over the dock-side, and partially getting them tangled around her head and neck.
In the chaos, she managed to dart off into the alleyways and lose her pursuers, but she was bruised, utterly lost, and incredibly upset. After nosing around, she managed to crawl into a ramshackle shed, and cried herself to sleep, utterly exhausted by the day's events.
The first few months of being on land were rough for the young dragoness. She had to evolve, had to figure out how to change her ways to fit this new environment. Not only could she not speak a word of Universal, but the waters near this city had been over-fished, forcing the fishermen to sail out into deeper waters, and depriving her of her usual food sources. At first she only came out at night. She would sleep during the day in her abandoned shed, slink out at nightfall to riffle through the scrap heaps and trash, then drag her precious finds back into the safety of her "den" before the sun came back up.
The flowers she had gotten tangled up in on that fateful night had fallen off as she scrambled into the shed through the hole in the wall, but- surprisingly- they refused to die. Instead, the flowering vines took root, clambering up the side of the shed and spreading around its base until her new home was well disguised, and cloaked in a protective layer of plant life that kept the interior relatively dark during the harsh sunny days.
As the years wore on, the hatchling got more and more comfortable in this new habitat. At first she was incredibly skittish, bolting at the first sign of another dragon's presence, much less any sort of sudden noise or movement. Eventually, she figured out she could tie those flowering vines across her eyes to come out during the day as well, and quickly realized that begging and stealing during the day was MUCH easier than sneaking about during the night. As she got older, she soon developed the practiced swagger of an alleycat, wandering onto the piers, snagging a fish-head and waltzing past the incredibly bemused fishermen. Her eyes remained incredibly sensitive to the light, to the point where mere sunlight was almost unbearable. As such, she tried gathering various scraps of fabric to use as pseudo-blindfolds, but none of the filthy rags lasted very long in her rough and tumble life style. As such, she started gathering the flowering vines now thriving around her little home and using those instead. Not only did they somehow last longer than the cloth scraps, but they had more gaps in the petals and leaves to allow her a better field of view, while still providing enough of a shelter from the sun to function properly.
It took a while, but slowly the hatchling-turned-adolescent began to discern meaning from the noises she heard shouted back and forth. From meaning, she found words, and from words came language. The first word she ever spoke was "fish", and it scared the poor fisherman she was mimicking half to death. At first she just parroted words that fishermen said, and it soon turned into a sort of game between them. They would try to get her to say a word, and for every one she got right, they would toss her a bit of fish.
After a while she figured out how to string different words together to form rough sentences (often lacking in grammar, but hey, she's trying), but this was proceeded by a brief period where the little wyvern would march right up to someone, and very authoritatively inform them: "Fish!" before stealing whatever scrap of food she had her eye on and bolting.
As she grew and learned to speak more fluently, she soon gathered that one sound in particular was always aimed either at, or about her: "Nez". Specifically, "Nezzie" when someone was happy with her, or "nEZZERA-!" when she was in trouble. Later, she would come to learn that "Nezzera" was a minor Ki'shan storm goddess that the fishermen worshiped, one known particularly well for her fierce temper, cunning, and unwavering loyalty- should the proper offerings be made of course, the sea is not known for its forgiving nature.
During this time, Nez was learning a lot about the world: who to trust, the places easiest to steal from, the people most likely to toss her scraps, and- most importantly- the art of pickpocketing. It was just food at first, but she soon learned the value of the little shiny things the villagers passed so carefully to each other in exchange for food and other goods, and at last began dipping into coin pouches as well as snatching food where she could.

Physical Appearance and Accessories
Height: 15ft tall
Length: 30ft long (10 of that is t a i l)
Wingspan: Her smaller wings have a wingspan of 20ft, while her larger pair has a wingspan of 50ft.
Scale/Fur/Feathers: Nezzera's scales are the color of the sea after a storm. They're a gorgeous dark blue-green color that fades into a brilliant gold at the midpoint of her wings, and along her fins. She has golden "eyespots" that trail from her neck and snout down to the tip of her tail, and adorn her upper legs as well. And lastly, she has an accent line of gold along the edges of her underbelly, and 2 pairs of gold banded scales on her hind legs.
Eyes: A pupil-less, faintly glowing, iridescent blue color. Due to their sensitive nature, they're usually covered by a flower crown, or some sort of bandana during the day.
Accessories: Nez usually has a set of satchels strapped to either side- holding a wide variety of items, from cool shells, to gold coins, to snacks, and even interesting flowers that she's picked up over the course of her travels. Additionally, Nezzera's eyes are EXTREMELY sensitive, so she has to keep them covered during the day, usually with a wreath of flowers that she's picked. In addition to the flowers over her eyes, Nez usually has flowers draped over and around her larger wings to match.
Horns/Spikes: Nez has a pair of simple, dark blue horns jutting from the back of her head that angle downwards, before spiking sharply upwards to create a sideways "V" shape, with webbing in between the points.
Overall Appearance: Nezzie was designed by the wonderful Wilbur! Her gallery of other art can be found here.
Abilities and Strengths
Abilities:
~Amphibious: Due to her aquatic heritage, Nezzera can breathe both air and water.
~Bio-luminescence: Nezzera g l o w s. She has several patches of bioluminescent scales (the "eye-like" patterns) that she can dim, brighten, or turn off at a thought, but her blood also carries a faint glow. The places where her blood is close to the surface of her skin- her eyes, the inside of her mouth, her ears, any wounds, etc- will constantly emit a faint blue glow.
~Bioelectrogenesis: Nezzera- metaphorically- has an electric personality, but she's also physically electrifying as well. Her body is lined with electrocytes, or cells that allow her to emit an electric current. This current can be used to cause instant cardiac arrest in small prey animals (medium sized fish and smaller), and can temporarily stun larger animals and dragons for a few seconds to a minute, depending on their size. When used in saltwater, Nez shocks EVERYTHING in a 60ft radius (30ft for fresh water because ~science), indiscriminately, be they friend or foe. Out of water, she can still inflict the same shock, but she must physically touch each of her targets.
To summarize, she has 3 "settings", if you will: low, medium, and high. For mechanics purpose, she has 10 "points" per hour, and each ability usage costs a certain number of points. NOTE: No matter the size, all characters count as "Large" for purposes of the extent of these abilities, unless their "player" wishes to extend the duration. Stunned creatures can only stumble/move at half speed, can only speak falteringly, can't actively use any abilities/magic and are much easier to hit for the duration (since they can barely move).
Low - Electroreception/Electrolocation: Nezzera can (passively) sense the size and location of any living creatures within 60ft, and can map out any and all terrain within 30ft of her without opening her eyes (30ft blindsight basically). Nezzera MUST be in the water for this to work, it doesn't work on land. Can be used infinitely, as the energy drain is negligible.
Medium - Stun Gun Setting: [30/60ft radius for fresh and salt water respectively] Can be used to stun any number of creatures within that radius for varying times, 2-4 posts if they're small (trout sized), 1-3 posts if they're medium (shark sized), and only momentarily (part of a post) if they're large. This ability takes 2 points per usage.
High - Heart Attack Level: [30/60ft radius for fresh and salt water respectively] Can be used to instantly kill small creatures (trout sized and smaller), paralyze medium creatures for 2-4 posts (shark sized) and stun large creatures for 1-2 posts. This ability takes 4 points to use.
~Aquatic Adaptations: Nezzera is perfectly adapted for life in the ocean. Specifically, for life on the ocean floor, miles beneath the surface. Despite being orphaned, Nezzera is quite literally blue blooded. Thanks to an abundance of the pigment hemocyanin in her blood, Nezzera can withstand the nearly boiling temperatures near hydrothermal vents, and can weather water temperatures as low as 28 degrees Fahrenheit relatively easily (MUST be in water, doesn't apply while out of water). Additionally, she can easily withstand changes in water pressure (she'd be just as fine at the surface as she would at the bottom of the deepest trench), and changes in salinity (she can breathe salt, brackish, and fresh water just as easily as normal breathing).
Strengths:
~Athletic: Nezzera looks rather lithe, but her muscle density is ridiculously high, thanks to her time spent at the bottom of the ocean. She packs quite the punch, and really quite strong for her size. Not to the degree of having super strength or anything like that, but just enough above average to have people do a double-take.
~Agile: Nez is a very quick dragon; not in the sense of swimming super fast, but in the sense that she'll fly, swim, run and fly circles around practically anyone else. She's good in close quarters, both above and below water, and excels at staying just out of harms way. Her smaller pair of wings helps a LOT with her maneuverability, and is the main contributor to this talent.
~Lightning Rod: Due to Nezzera's unique body structure, she is completely immune to any sort of electrical attack, or any other sort of effect dealt via electricity. Not only is she immune to them, if she's attacked by any sort of electrical ability, she will recharge 1-3 points, depending on the strength of the attack/effect.
~Perfect Darkvision: Darkness doesn't exist for Nez. Or, well, it does, but she can easily see through it, and actually sees better in complete darkness than she does in full sunlight. Nezzie's eyes are practically all pupil, so having too much light can actually hurt her eyes if she's not careful. But- thanks to that sensitivity, Nezzera's darkvision is unmatched. In fact, colors are actually brighter and more vibrant to her in the dark, and she'll often turn out the lights in an effort to see something better.
~Stealthy: Nezzera grew up on the streets for the first part of her life, and as such has retained a number of the skills that kept her alive during that period. Chiefly, the ability to be stealthy when the situation calls for it. She can sneak around pretty easily, but her pride and joy is her extraordinary ability to pick-pocket without her victims noticing here presence.
Weaknesses:
~Unwise: Nezzera... is a creature of instinct. She acts without thinking about the consequences, doesn't have the best sense for what the consequences of her actions will do, and just generally doesn't have the best foresight. She's very much into instant gratification, and things that require time and patience quickly lose her attention.
~Flying: Though Nezzera is a fast flier, she gets tired very quickly when flying, and can usually only withstand 45 minutes to an hour of consistent flight before needing to rest for half of the time that she spent flying. Flying long distances is almost completely out of the question for her since she has to rest so frequently.
~High Water Consumption: Nezzera needs l o t s of water, she gets dehydrated very easily. To put it into perspective, she needs to consume twice as much water as a normal dragon does per day, and should breathe water at least once every 3-5 days or risk drying out her gills.
~Sensitive Gills: Nezzera's gills are one of the weakest points on her body. Though the scales covering them aren't particularly weak, the flesh underneath is ridiculously sensitive. They slice easily, bruise easily, and are hyper-sensitive in general to any sort of damage.
~Topographical Disorientation a la City: ...Despite being the navigator? Nezzera is ridiculously bad at navigating cities. Every building looks similar, every courtyard has the same layout, every street looks exactly the same. If you take more than 3 turns, she's lost. It takes her 3 times as long to navigate cities by herself, and that's if she's trying to find somewhere. If she gets distracted by stalls selling interesting things, then it can take anywhere between 5-10 times as long as it ordinarily would take. This is negated by being led to a place by someone, but she's going to have to be led back too, otherwise she will get lost.
~Sensitive Eyes: Perfect darkvision comes with a cost, Nezzie needs to keep her eyes covered during the day, or during any other exposure to bright light; or risk damaging her eyes. If her blindfold is ripped off in bright light (when Nez isn't prepared for it) it will temporarily stun her for a whole post (can only stumble, can only speak falteringly, can't actively use any abilities/magic and is much easier to hit), and she'll remain and disoriented for 1-2 posts afterwards (i.e. partially blinded, in pain, dizzy, etc...).
~The Pinocchio Instinct: Nezzera cannot tell a lie. Or, well, she can try, but she's notoriously bad at selling lies, and routinely forgets that secrets are supposed to be, well, secret! Secrets told to Nez often don't survive very long for one of these reasons or the other.
Fighting Style: Nezzera is a close-quarters fighter. If possible, she prefers to drag her opponents underwater, and let the fury of the seas do the work for her. If she can't get access to a body of water, Nez relies on her strength and her maneuverability, darting in to land a hard blow before ducking out of her opponents reach again.
