Cerulean Empty Cerulean

Post by Kuda Fri Apr 23, 2021 1:22 pm

Personality and the Basics

Name: Cerulean
Pronunciation: seh-rue-lee-an
Gender: Female
Type: Eastern Dragon
Species: Eastern River Dragon
Age: 20
Date of Birth: 11 December
Personality:
Cerulean tends to be a high energy dragon. Unless she was woken up before she wanted to wake up, then she's a very grumpy energy dragon. Cerulean tends to be excitable, often over things that others would usually find boring. She can also be a bit random, sometimes having the persistence to start a project or task and see it through to the end no matter what, and other times entirely dropping it and forgetting she was doing it. When she promises to do somehting, however, she does her best to fight through that part of her, not wanting to disappoint who she made the promise to. When she finds something that looks fun to do, she may try persistently to get a friend to join. Usually, she doesn't pull others along when she thinks there's risk of being scolded.
When upset, Cerulean will usually try to bear it and convince herself that she is not upset, though she will be noticeably a little less high energy than what close friends might be used to. When it gets to the point where she cannot bear her grief, she will often fall into a deep seclusion, with a great desire to make sure her friends and family only see her as a happy dragon.
When put in a scary or an unnerving situation, Cerulean does better handling it if she goes into such situation expecting that it'd happen even if still prefering to be somewhere else. When put in that situation on the spot and not expecting, it's easier for her to panic and most likely flee. It can be difficult for others to pull her back out of a panic, though she does recover significantly faster when a friend is around to help her calm down.
Hobbies:
While not actively having to do something else, or sometimes when she's had enough and REALLY wants to stop what she's doing, Cerulean's curiosity tends to lead her rather far from home, travelling and/or exploring. Frequently at nights, especially on nights of full moons, Cerulean likes to fly as high up as she can, often well above the clouds. On clearer nights, she may instead choose a high mountain if one is available and simply rest there. Cerulean also likes to make things. Whether that's a carving, a painting, a flower arrangement. She needs her creative outlets. She is just as likely to spend long periods of time in water as she is outside the water.
Likes:
Sweet foods, especially fruit
Exploring
Fancy aerobatics and water maneuvres. Performance in general for her own interest.
Watching animals
Dislikes:
Being completely ignored when trying to say something
Excessively hot and dry places
"For real" fights. The ones with broken bones and bloody snouts.
Being expected to remain in one place for too long
Fears:
-Being confined or trapped for an extended period of time and not knowing how to leave
-Things with tentacles. Especially if they get to be close to her size or larger.
-Fire. Cerulean has very little experience around fire, except that even a small fire hurts a lot.
-Having the attention of the entire room on her for a less-than awesome reason.
Quote: "There are loads of things I don't like! But I only know I don't because I tried. Maybe it really was worth it?"

Origin, Culture, and Family

Place of Origin: Hatched from an egg which was buried on the beach bordering the Iceilo Sea.
Tribe: Lakara
Position: Fish
Language: Aquatic, Universal
Home: Usually, they stay and keep whatever possessions they have in a small cave
Parents: None of the family she knows is blood-related. The dragons who adopted her are both greenish-blue western sea dragons. Her true parents were both Eastern River Dragons. Her traits most closely matched her mother's.
Siblings: Her older brother by five years, who is actual offspring of the dragons who adopted her.
Relatives: Possible distant relatives in Kamiil. She wouldn't know them.
Mate: NO MATE
Offspring: No offspring
History:
Cerulean's true parents were both Eastern River Dragons that were ordinary Kailin rank members of the Kaamil tribe who dwelt around the icy rivers. They were still young adults when they had her egg. Being the dramatic secret couple that they were, neither of their parents knew about their relationship or the egg that came from them. The two of them, wanting to declare their relationship to each other's families first, chose to hide the egg in the sand near the Iceilo Sea to avoid being found out sooner. They had meant to return to the egg not too long after. Unfortunately, before they got the chance to admit to having an egg, a small group of aggressive rogue dragons were attacking an outlying area of the tribe. Her parents took initiative to defend it until stronger help came, but they both perished, consequently abandoning the egg.
Cerulean's egg was found weeks later half buried in the sand of the beach by a pair of western sea dragons from the Lakara tribe. Partly out of curiosity and adventurous spirit, they made the decision to watch over the egg and wait for it to hatch. The resulting dragon that hatched fromt he egg was very different from what they expected. Feeling now responsible since they had gone that far already, the two sea dragons did their best to take care of the hatchling. They were filled with worry and wonder when Cerulean seemed to decidedly eat very little and often rarely of what they brought to feed, yet still lived, plenty full of energy.
Cerulean figured out her magic early enough that she was able to join them in the ocean where she met her curious new older brother. Despite how different she was, she grew up happy, even if she sometimes did wonder whose egg she came from. Their Family, especially with Cerulean there, was particularly noticeable. She obviously looked nothing like the family who adopted her. Others found her to be scrawny and small compared to other tribe mates her age. Cerulean would claim she's still growing and believe that it herself, but in reality had no idea. Her brother alone already brought in enough attention with his high aspiration and constant self training to earn the rank of Seal. By comparison, Cerulean, who didn't volunteer to join tribe huntings and was often doing her own thing outside of learning and studying as her parents had them do, was often seen as particularly lazy. She also caused quite a bit of reckless trouble while younger, like that one time she, along with a few friends, replaced half the tribe's underwater beds with convincingly similar looking rocks. The frequent evening family trips to the surface also caused plenty of conspiracy rumours, though they didn't last long.
In one incident, during one of her return trips from from the surface when she was only eleven years old, Cerulean was carelessly playing and accidentally irritated a camouflaged octopus. That octopus gripped on to Cerulean with its tentacles, and Cerulean, regardless of how quickly she reacted and how hard she struggled, was not strong enough to escape. Thanks to the quick response of her family, she was able to escape unharmed, but she found the experience incredibly traumatic. For the following week, she would nervously glance around and paranoia would take over, thinking that on some random rock was secretly a camouflaged octopus waiting to attack her. Over time, she was able to calm down, but she still has a tendency to flinch at the sight or mention of octopi and things similar to it, and would stay far clear of any she noticed. Some not-so-nice tribe mates took advantage of her fear, playing pranks such as saying "Oh look, an Octopus!" or making fake tentacles to bother her with. Lucky for her that even when her parents weren't around, her brother was always there to stand up for her.
As she got older, Cerulean was given a bit more freedom to go to the surface on her own, though others would still sometimes tag along. Her brother had finally been at least recognized as a seal-in-training, but he would still take time to spend with her, making sure she wasn't alone, even when it seemed her friends had gone off on their own things. With a bit more independence, Cerulean spent more time above the surface, exploring what she could find. She found herself curious about where she came from, and spent quite a bit of time exploring the Iceilo shoreline, looking for possible hints to her family, but never found anything. Otherwise, she ventures around looking for cool places in and out of the water.

Abilities and Strengths

Abilities:
Both of Cerulean's magic and natural energy come from absorbing light from the moon. From absorbing the moonlight, Cerulean gets nearly all the energy she needs, and rarely actually needs to eat. Cerulean will still need to eat sometimes for nutrients. She generally prefers looking for fruits on land over fish and meat. The amount of energy she gets from the moon is dependent on the moon phase. A fuller moon means more energy. Moonless nights don't do anything for her. While proper food would fully sustain her physically without the moon, Cerulean's magic still needs the moon energy. She would be grounded and magicless, totally dependant on her far less noteworthy nonmagical ability until she got the magical moon energy she needed. It luckily takes a while for Cerulean's magic to drain so completely, as from a single night under a full moon, her magic could last for two weeks of normal daily activity, which generally involves a lot of flying or being underwater.
Strengths:
・Cerulean is quick, agile, and particularly flexible. She can quickly and easily slip through openings that are just barely large enough for her to fit through, as well as squeeze her way through openings that would normally be just a bit too small for her someone her size- though she's gotten stuck that way many times.
・A thick coat of smooth fur that keeps her warm in cooler areas.
Weaknesses:
・Due to her general lack of need or desire to hunt for food and her high dependency on magic, Cerulean is not particularly strong compared to other dragons. She'd be easily overpowered by brute strength.
・Cerulean's magic is entirely dependant on the moon. Being deprived from it for a long time or being in anyway forcibly cut off from her magic can be incredibly dangerous for her. After about two weeks of no moonlight nor food, Cerulean would begin to feel seriously malnourished. After three weeks, regardless of food, her magic will become noticeably dulled, magic which she depends on for flying, for breathing underwater. Without her magic, she can resist drowning for at most thirty minutes for an emergency swim to the surface.
・Cerulean, being on the younger side, tends to take seriously a lot of what is told to her. She can be quite impressionable and gullible, especially by those that seem to be older than her.  Facts she thinks she knew may be replaced with the "enlightened knowledge" of their elders. She's also not well informed of things above the water, and can end up filling a lot of blanks with lies told by others.
・Cerulean's water-based magic, which is the most of her magic, mostly requires both that there's water present, and involves a lot of movement to direct the magic. If Cerulean were restrained or she were kept away from a sufficient amount of water (most of her controlling capacity being close to her size), she would have much less natural defense available to her.
Fighting Style:
Cerulean highly prefers to avoid fighting, and is largely untrained. If pressed into a situation where conflict is unavoidable, her most likely tactics would be to make short snaps forward in attempt to make the opponent flinch or surprise them to gain an opening to flee. If that doesn't work very well, she may use her magic to try to push them away, stun them, or hold them in place. In general, Cerulean would try very hard to not be caught. Otherwise, she'd improvise and more likely flail with teeth and claws.
Magic:
For Cerulean, using magic is the same as breathing. In particular, she entirely depends on her magic to fly, and to breathe when underwater which she often does for long periods of time. Even though she may not be as magically strong as someone more formally trained, Cerulean has a high aptitude for learning more magic when she dedicates herself to it.
・Flying- Even though Cerulean lacks wings, Cerulean can fly with her magic.
・Water Magic: The great majority of the magic Cerulean has is related to water.
-Control currents: Cerulean is able to manipulate the water to create a magically artificial current. This can be used to speed up underwater travel for her and those along the same path, and it may also be used as an attempt to slow down those she'd rather not follow her.  She can choose not to be affected by the magical current. This can also be used to help her more easily swim against strong river currents. The style of this magic itself isn't very far from how she flies.
-Tidal wave: Not as dramatic as it sounds, that is simply what she calls it. It creates a single large wave, which can reach at most around 15 feet high. While she can do this from range, it's more effective when directly striking the water with her tail or claws.
-Control water: Cerulean's basic ability to manipulate water. She can move it and shape it as she wants, an amout of water equal to about her own body size. She can move the water as fast as she can naturally move her own body. This also works for snow and mist and other forms of water, though ice can be more difficult to control. She can't shape solid ice, and can only control ice that is half her size or smaller. Cerulean may also use this ability to quickly get herself dry, and to save waterlogged belongings.
-Geyser Beam: The only magic she has that seems to magically create water. (She wouldn't know where it came from if someone asked.) Cerulean is capable of ejecting a thinly concentrated high pressured beam of water from her mouth. This can be quite straining, and she often needs to catch her breath and wait a while after using it. (A full post to catch her breath enough to move, and she'll still be slowed down for another post)
-Temperature Shift: Cerulean can change the temperature of nearby water, to as high as a little below boiling point and as low as to freezing point. It works best if Cerulean directly hovers over the intended area. Being in the water when doing so carries risk of burning or freezing herself unintentionally. Freezing the surface directly below her can happen near instantly, and takes about  eight seconds to create an iceberg with a radius of four feet and about five inches thick. Heating the water proves to be more challenging especially in active bodies of water. While it takes about three minutes for the water to become hot, she must continually maintain concentration on the magic to keep the surrounding water from quickly trying to balance the great amount of heat. She can only do this for two square feet's worth of water. (In one post to freeze the water in immediate focus, and another post to freeze the rest within radius. Heating takes three posts' worth of time and requires continual concentration throughout its use.) Separately contained water is a whole lot easier to heat.
-Water Purification: Cerulean is capable of purifying water. It requires touching the water and works for a radius of about four feet from where she touched. This magic removes all impurities from the water, including the salt from the ocean. This works better if the water is contained separately from other bodies of water, where the rest of the impure waters won't flow in to replace what was lost.

・Wind Magic: It is more basic than her water magic. She uses her wind magic to fly. Wherever she's flying, there's likely to be quite a bit of wind.
-Gust: A short burst of air, easily scatters snow, sand, and leaves. It's not particularly strong against opponents, though may give a startle to flying creatures.

・Light magic: Simply makes light. Cerulean's body doesn't have naturally glowing markings like some may be led to believe. She uses magic to specifically make those markings glow. While she could technically make her whole body glow, she prefers to do it with just those markings, and thinks it looks cooler that way. She uses this ability to communicate with Aquatic.
-Flash: Creating a light that can illuminate darkness. She's only ever learned to create these flashes on her body. Cerulean may also use a quick and sudden flash in attempt to temporarily blind and stun opponents.

Liquid Healing: Cerulean isn't totally sure how it works, but believes it is a combination of light and water magic. She just knows that this magic only works with water, and that it makes the water super glowy. Can only be done with touch. This speeds up the natural healing speed about four times the normal. Concentration is required to keep it working. Other treatments are usually needed for serious injuries beforehand, since this doesn't do well for removing infection.

Cerulean Empty Re: Cerulean

Post by EmriTheUnstoppable Fri Apr 23, 2021 5:58 pm

This is a fantastic application- I really appreciate your attention to detail! Alright, but now for the actual grading:

Personality and the Basics
All good here!

Origin, Culture, and Family
All good here too!

Physical Appearance and Accessories
Also all good!

Abilities and Strengths
Now this is where the edits come in- but fear not! It's not all that many changes, more so just some clarification:

Abilities:
Does she still need to eat? And- if she's been cut off from the moon for a while- can she just eat regular food to compensate for the lack of moonlight? If so, does eating regular food refill her magic as well? Or is it just moonlight that recharges it? And lastly- mostly out of curiosity- how long does it take her to fully recharge in the moonlight? Is it just a "one and done" thing where it just has to touch her scales for an instant? Or would to take longer? (You don't have to do toooo much detail with that last bit, just establish whether or not it's an instant recharge; i.e. I'm just making sure she doesn't get an unlimited source of magic while in full moonlight or something like that)

Strengths and Weaknesses:
From what it looks like, you've got 2 Strengths & 2 Weaknesses; you need one more weakness than strength here. And- as an edition- is there a point where she'll die without being exposed to moonlight? Or will she be fine if she just has regular food?

Fighting Style:
All good!

Magic:
As a comment on the overall section here- This is a l o t of magic for a 20 year old- It does make sense a bit since she came from 2 magically inclined parents, but just something to think about as you go on (Not an actually required change, just some food for thought)

For clarification- she uses magic to breathe underwater, so how long can she breathe underwater (normally) before needing to go recharge her magic?

-Control water: Cerulean's basic ability to manipulate water. She can move it and shape it as she wants, an amount of water equal to about her own body size. She can move the water as fast as she can naturally move her own body. This also works for snow, but not quite so much for ice. Cerulean may also use this ability to quickly get herself dry, and to save waterlogged belongings.

Does it still work a little bit for ice? Like, can she move half as much as her body's size? Does she just melt it with Temperature Shift to manipulate it? Or can she not manipulate it at all?

-Geyser Beam: The only magic she has that seems to magically create water. (She wouldn't know where it came from if someone asked.) Cerulean is capable of ejecting a thinly concentrated high pressured beam of water from her mouth. This can be quite straining, and she often needs to catch her breath and wait a while after using it.

How long does she need to catch her breath afterwards? And does she have to sit still to catch her breath, or does this just mean there's a cool down for each time she fires the beam? Please put your times (if they're short, like <1 minute) into post limits! So, for example, "there's a 1 post cool down between each beam" or something akin to that

-Temperature Shift: Cerulean can change the temperature of nearby water, to as high as a little below boiling point and as low as to freezing point.

Is this an instant effect? Or does it take time? Also, how much can she freeze/almost boil at once?

Liquid Healing: Cerulean isn't totally sure how it works, but believes it is a combination of light and water magic. She just knows that this magic only works with water, and that it makes the water super glowy. Can only be done with touch. This helps speed up the healing of an injury. Other treatments are usually needed for serious injuries beforehand, since this doesn't do well for removing infection.

Just clarification here- how much faster do injuries heal? Is it something like twice as fast? Or more of an instantaneous thing?

Did you mean to put 106 centimeters? That is around 3.5 feet tall. Just verifying, as this will probably be perfect (still small though) once we standardize dragon heights to be smaller, but just wanted to make sure you are okay being tiny until sizes are standardized, as average dragon height seems to be 60ish feet or so currently.

-Control water: Does this include blood/sweat?

Otherwise, all looks great, really nicely fleshed out balanced character. ^^

Yeah xD I was going for at least a shorter-than-average dragon
And following that, I found that their age was low compared to other chars I looked at for general reference.

As for blood, I'd say nah. Blood and sweat are maybe more complicated? xD
Also OOCly, I don't want to see my character going blood-crazy pff
